about
The track is based on the Chuvash folk song "Selime", reinterpreted by jazz musicians. Chuvash is one of the small nationalities of Russia living on the banks of the Volga river. Chuvash language is the only extant language of the Bulgar group of the Turkic language family. The frontwoman of the group, Vera Kozhemanova is an ethnic Chuvash, therefore the group's creativity takes its roots from the Chuvash culture. “Selime” is associated with “the hymn of avenged women’s narcissism”. This song was used earlier in Chuvash folk dances. The harmony is represented by modal jazz in Shanu’s arrangement. The music is based on the organ point, which is typical for Baroque music. Expressive punk rock rhythms sound in the code. In “Selime” you can catch the flavor of Balkan, Armenian, Russian and Chuvash music.
Warm, smoky songs that pull from country and roots-rock, but transform them, centering emotive melodies and sharp songwriting. Bandcamp New & Notable May 1, 2021
